The short version

If you want nightclubs, a packed Old Town, Instagram-famous restaurants, and constant noise — go to Budva. It delivers all of that.

If you want a private beach 0 metres from your hotel, no beach vendors, a genuinely good Turkish restaurant, and the ability to hear yourself think — come to Dobra Voda.

Both places are on the same Adriatic coast. Both are beautiful. The difference is the experience around them.

Location and getting there

Budva is roughly 35 km north of Dobra Voda, about 45 minutes by car on the coastal road. Both are reachable from Tivat Airport (75 min to Dobra Voda, ~50 min to Budva) or Podgorica Airport (60 min to Dobra Voda, 75 min to Budva via highway).

Key point: if you're flying into Podgorica, Dobra Voda is actually closer. If you're flying into Tivat, Budva is the slight winner on drive time.

Azura Bay Hotel offers a free airport transfer from both Podgorica and Tivat for guests who book direct. Most Budva hotels charge €40–70 for the same service.

The beaches: a real comparison

Budva

Budva has several beaches — Slovenska Plaža is the main one, stretching 1.7 km. It is well-managed and has clear water. It is also extremely busy in July and August, with sunbeds costing €15–30/day per person. Beach vendors approach you every 15–20 minutes. Music from beach bars competes from all directions.

The beaches are public (free entry) but the organized lounger sections dominate. Finding a quiet spot in peak season is genuinely difficult.

Dobra Voda

Dobra Voda's beach is smaller and far less busy. It is a pebbly coastline with crystal-clear water — the Montenegro Adriatic is known for visibility of 30+ metres. Azura Bay Hotel's beach is private: only hotel guests, no vendors, no music unless you want it.

The village has a public beach section too. Even in August, it does not reach Budva-level crowds.

Who should choose Dobra Voda

Who should choose Budva

The middle ground: Stay at Azura Bay Hotel in Dobra Voda and take a day trip to Budva's Old Town. You get the quiet base and still see the famous sights. Budva is 30–45 minutes away by car or taxi (around €25–35 one way).

Price difference in 2026

Budva has inflated significantly in recent years. A decent 4-star hotel on or near the beach in peak season runs €150–300/night. Parking is expensive. Beach sunbeds add €30–60/day for two people.

In Dobra Voda, Azura Bay Hotel starts at €85/night for a Sea View Room in shoulder season, rising to around €150/night in peak. Beach access is free for hotel guests. Airport transfer is free with direct booking. The total cost of a week's holiday is typically 30–40% lower than an equivalent Budva stay.

The honest conclusion

Montenegro's coast is beautiful everywhere. The question is what kind of beautiful you want.

Budva is a resort town with all the resort trappings — good and bad. Dobra Voda is what the coast looked like before the crowds arrived. It is not undiscovered (that ship has sailed), but it is still quiet enough to matter.

If you've read this far and the Dobra Voda description sounds more like your holiday, we'd love to have you.
